The food is amazing and the people who work there will go above and beyond to make sure you have what you want. We forgot a small part of a pick up order and they sent a driver to bring it to us. They didn't have to do that - but they rock and their food is amazing.

Everything was super flavorful. Small family run business and we are so glad we took a chance on this place. Can't wait to go back again.

I was pleasantly surprised by everything we got! I loved the pork fried rice and the crab rangoons were large. I got a very large side of sweet and sour sauce which was unexpected. The pepper steak was very good, and it had black beans in it. The potstickers were delish! The only thing I wouldn't get again was the egg roll. But otherwise I'll be back!

My family has been coming to Hunan Star for over 15 years now, and the food and incredibly friendly service never disappoint. The family that runs it still recognizes me after all these years, even after a few years of not stopping by when I moved away from Skokie. The food is always incredibly fresh and delicious, and I constantly crave it. I will drive in from the city just to pick up an order of the beef fried rice, Mongolian beef, and veggie egg rolls because I haven't found anything nearly as good in my neighborhood. This, by far, is the best Chinese takeout I've ever had and I'll always continue to support them!

Excellent Asian food, accommodating with gluten free diet as far as coming up with alternate sauce for egg foo young. Egg rolls are awesome! Owners and family are courteous, prompt and friendly. Place is clean.

Hunan Star

Craving bold Chinese flavors in Evanston? Hunan Star at 3339 Golf Rd, Evanston, IL 60203 serves up unforgettable stir-fried dishes, comforting noodles, and generous portions in a cozy, no-fuss setting that’s become a favorite for locals and students alike.

Discover Hunan Star in Evanston – A Hidden Gem for Bold Chinese Cuisine

If you've ever found yourself in Evanston searching for authentic Chinese food that hits all the right notes—spicy, savory, and satisfying—Hunan Star should be on your radar. This family-run restaurant doesn’t try to impress with flash. Instead, it wins hearts with food that’s consistently flavorful, portions that satisfy even the biggest appetite, and service that feels like home.

Tucked between local businesses on Golf Road, Hunan Star doesn’t stand out much from the outside. But inside? You’re welcomed with the warm aroma of garlic, chili, and ginger that instantly tells you: you're in the right place. Dine-in regulars speak highly of the hot and sour soup, often described as “the best in town,” while newcomers are often guided to try house favorites like General Tso’s Chicken or Hunan Beef, both known for their bold heat and crispy texture.

What’s on the Menu: From Comfort Staples to Hunan Specialties

It’s easy to get lost in the massive menu at Hunan Star—there’s something for everyone, whether you love mild flavors or the type of heat that makes your eyes water (in a good way). Their menu is a smart balance of American Chinese favorites and traditional Hunan-style dishes, which lean heavier on spice and savory sauces.

Beef with Broccoli, Sweet and Sour Chicken, and Shrimp Fried Rice cover the comfort zone, while dishes like Twice-Cooked Pork, Mapo Tofu, and the fiery Hunan Chicken introduce guests to a deeper flavor profile packed with black bean sauce, Sichuan peppercorn, and chili oil.

Vegetarian options aren’t an afterthought either—Eggplant with Garlic Sauce and Tofu with Mixed Vegetables are among the standouts, making this place equally loved by non-meat eaters.

Why Locals Keep Coming Back – More Than Just Food

One of the most common themes in customer reviews? The hospitality. It’s the kind of place where the staff remember your face and your order. That’s rare in an age of fast-turnover dining. Whether you’re dining in, picking up a takeout order, or having your meal delivered, the consistency in both flavor and service is what keeps repeat customers loyal.

The location is especially convenient for families, students from Northwestern University, and employees from nearby offices who rely on their lunch specials. And yes, those lunch specials deserve a mention—affordable, filling, and always freshly prepared.

Several online reviews highlight how quickly orders are prepared, even during peak hours. One Yelp reviewer noted, “I’ve been ordering from Hunan Star for 10 years. Not once have they disappointed.” Others praise the value, saying the portion sizes often stretch into two meals.

Comfort Food, Delivered or Dine-In – Your Go-To Chinese Spot

Whether you’re planning a quick solo lunch or a casual dinner with friends, Hunan Star makes it easy to enjoy Chinese food on your terms. The interior is clean and quiet, perfect for a no-frills dine-in meal. But it’s also built for takeout—sturdy packaging, generous portions, and accurate prep times make it a top pick for those looking to bring the flavor home.

Delivery options through popular platforms like Grubhub and DoorDash mean you don’t have to leave your couch to enjoy dishes like Orange Chicken or Lo Mein. And if you’re someone who enjoys pairing comfort food with convenience, this place is hard to beat.

What makes Hunan Star unique isn’t just the food—it’s the balance of comfort, familiarity, and culinary intensity. You’re not just getting Chinese food here; you’re getting a piece of a community staple that has quietly built a loyal following through good food and better service.

Let’s just say, once you’ve tried the Kung Pao Shrimp or slurped up every last noodle from the Beef Chow Fun, you’ll understand why so many Evanston residents consider Hunan Star their go-to for Chinese fare.
